Island peak climbing is one of the most popular trekking available in Nepal that is suitable for both novice as well as seasoned trekkers. Island peak at 6189 meters is also called Imja Tse. Situated at Mahalangur Himalayan region of the Everest region, Edmund Hillary was the first person to climb Island peak as an acclimatization before climbing Mount Everest.

The panoramas and scenery that is seen throughout the trekking trail of Island peak is simply exhilarating. Even if this trek is physically taxing and requires some technical knowledge and physical fitness, island peak climbing is not entirely technical. The mesmerizing views of majestic mountains of Nepal like Mount Everest (8848 m), Makalu (8463 m), Lhotse (8383 m), Nuptse (7879 m), Amadablam (6812 m) compensate for any hardships of this tour.

Island peak can be combined with Everest Base Camp trek offering you the sight of wildlife and vegetation of Sagarmatha National Park. Sagarmatha National Park boasts rare and endangered animals like musk deer, Himalayan goat and Himalaya pheasant etcetera.

Beside the natural aspect of this tour, this mountain climbing tour also has plenty to offer in terms of culture and traditions. Trekking in the splendor of Everest region in the heart of Himalayas, you can get a glimpse of the unique Buddhist culture and Sherpa culture of the Khumbu valley.

Trip Highlights

  • Rare flora and fauna of Sagarmatha National Park
  •  Views of Mount Everest and many more
  • Thrilling flight to Lukla
  •  Magnetic views from the top of Island Peak
  •  Pristine and pure Sherpa and Buddhist culture
How difficult is Island Peak climbing?

In short, Island Peak climbing is a challenging tour compared to Mera Island Climbing, but it is not very strenuous or difficult. We highly recommend you to get accustomed to walking on rugged or uneven surfaces before taking this or any other treks in Nepal.

Climbing Island Peak requires basic rope handling skills and technical mountaineering skills. Since this adventurous journey goes above the altitude of 5000 meters, Altitude sickness might be a huge obstacle unless you prepare accordingly. If you take certain factors like fitness level, basic climbing training, altitude sickness prevention and cues, Island Peak climbing is going to be a challenging but very exciting opportunity to explore the Himalayas of Nepal.

Island Peak climbing with EBC trek:

Though your climbing tour begins as soon as you enter Nepal, it officially begins after heading to Lukla via a scenic flight. This domestic flight to lukla is both exciting and thrilling with a plethora of mountain views. Everest Base Camp trek is also a part of this customized Island peak climbing. This has double benefits. Firstly, the trek to Everest base camp helps in better acclimatization for climbing the Island Peak. Secondly, in a single trip, you will have completed 2 most appealing treks of not just Nepal but the entire world. This tour is a golden opportunity to explore the Buddhist culture and Sherpa lifestyle of the Khumbu region.

Climbing training for Island Peak:

You will be briefed about the mountain climbing several times before attempting to climb the peak. The guide will provide you suggestions on very important climbing techniques; climb on slab rocks, on ladders, traversing on hidden crevasses on the snowfields and on blue ice, Jumaring, Active rappelling (Up sailing), and so on. Aside from this, our staff will also advise you on Safety placement, proper arrangement of gears and equipment while climbing and use of proper climbing gears.

Best time for Island Peak climbing:

While answering broadly in terms of season, the best time for Island Peak Climbing is Autumn season and Spring season. During these seasons, the temperature is suitable and the trekking trails are safe. To add cherry on the top, the views are vivid and simply outstanding during these seasons.

Spring has one further advantage which is blooming rhododendrons. Autumn and Spring in general is considered the best seasons for trekking, hiking or climbing experiences in Nepal. During some specific months of these seasons, the trekking trails might be crowded with other trekkers or climbers. To be more precise, Early September to the end of November in the autumn season and March to May in the Spring season is considered the best time for Island Peak Climbing.

This tour is available throughout the year. However, summer season is not recommended for this tour because of unpredictable rains, slippery trails, humid weather and poor visibility of mountain views. Winter season offers vivid panoramas of mountains and nature. If you are willing to stand the cold, the initial and end months of winter is also a good time for island peak climbing.
