How difficult is Gokyo Lake Cho La pass Everest Base Camp Trek?

Since Gokyo lake Chola Pass Everest Base Camp Trek goes beyond 5000 meters and encompasses some of the challenging passes and viewpoints of the Everest region, this trek is of strenuous difficulty. What is the best season and time for Gokyo Lake Chola pass Everest Base Camp Trek?

The best time for Gokyo Lake Chola Pass Trekking is March, April, May, September, October and November (Spring and Autumn season). However, this tour is completely flexible and can be taken throughout the year. Spring and Autumn are particularly famous for the astounding and clear views, trekking route safety, availability of lodges, safe and sound weather etcetera.  Summer season can get somewhat challenging and inappropriate due to rainfall which results in risky trails, lower mountain invisibility etc. Winter season, on the other hand, can get extremely cold thus making trekking difficult. Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu 1,350m (4,429 ft), transfers to Hotel.

To welcome you to the country of Himalayas, one of our representatives will come to pick you up at the airport. We will help you collect your luggage and escort you to the hotel where a room is pre-booked for you. We will also arrange a cultural dinner program for you in a Nepali style restaurant. Overnight stay at a hotel room in Kathmandu.

Accommodation: 3 Stars standard of Hotel in Thamel.

Transportation: Tourist bus or car.

Meals: Welcome Dinner, Breakfast, and including drinks.

Day 02: Fly to Lukla, trek start to Phakding 2,610m (8,563 ft) 2.5 hrs.

Today we will fly from the capital city of Nepal to the mountainous Lukla region from where our trekking will officially begin. The flight will be about 40 minutes long. As we fly towards eastern Nepal, you can witness the glowing mountains of Nepal from the flight as well. This flight is both scenic and adventurous as we will since Lukla airport is one of the most highly located airports in the world.

Upon arrival in Lukla, you will meet the porters, guides and so on. We will then trek towards Phakding (2610 m). The trekking trail takes you to some of the most valued serene landscapes like prayer stones, suspension bridges, cultivated lands, mani walls, gompas, pastures etc. After trekking for about 2 hours and 30 minutes whilst also relishing the pristine environment, we will arrive in Phakding village where we will stay overnight. You need not worried about the night stay at all since, they are equipped with comfortable beds, cozy quilts and internet services.

Maximum Elevation: 2,860m (9,383 ft).

Trekking hours: 2.5 hours, 200m descent, 50m ascent.

Day 03: Head to Namche bazaar 3,440m (11,286 ft), 5hrs.

Today we will head towards Namche Bazar which acts as the getaway to Khumbu region. Namche Bazar is a beautiful town with both natural and man-made commodities. As we leave behind Phakding and set towards the capital city of Khumbu valley i.e. Namche Bazar, we will ascend alongside the Dudh Koshi River until we reach the convergence of Dudh Koshi River and Bhote Koshi river also called Dovan. As we trek, we will see a changing landscape which includes waterfalls, mixed rhododendron and blue pine forest, mountain views (especially mountain Thamserku), Hillary bridge, Mani walls, prayer stones and so much more. In addition to these attractions, some unique and beautiful wildlife like a Himalayan Goat, Musk Deer, Jharals, Danphe etc.

Depending upon the pace of trekking, it will take about 5 to 6 hours to reach Namche Bazar. After 2 to 3 hours of walking from Phakding, we will reach the main entry gate of Sagarmatha National Park at Jhorsalle. This is where we will have to present and register our permits. We can also enjoy our lunch in Jorsalle or wait till we reach Namche Bazar. Overnight stay at a hotel in Namche Bazar.

Elevation: 3,440 meters (11,286 ft).

Trekking hours: 5 hours, 1000m ascent, 100m descent.

Accommodation: Lodge the attached bathroom.

Day 04: Hike to Everest view Hotel 3,870m (12,697 ft) 5hrs.

The fourth day of our trip is acclimatization or rest day so that our body can adjust to the changing climate. As usual, we will commence the day with breakfast in the guesthouse. After this, we will hike up to Khumjung village and explore the Everest View Hotel. Located at a whopping 3880 meters, Everest View hotel is one of the major attractions of the Everest region which offers majestic views of the highest mountains in the world. This is one of the most suitable vantages to enjoy the overall of mountains like Mount Everest, Nuptse, Thamserku, Kusum Khangru, Khong De etc. In the trekking route, there are some beautiful sights to be relished like Khumjung village, pine forest etc. As the day ripens, we will also explore the Khumjung village. With remarkable panoramas, unique Sherpa culture, pristine settings and ancient monastery, Khumjung village will bestow you with unforgettable memories.

Day 05: Trek to Phortse thanga 3,680 meters (12,073 ft), 5hrs.

After opening the day with delicious breakfast in the teahouse, we will head towards Phortse Thanga located at 3680 meters. Initially, the trek is quite pleasant thanks to the gradually ascending trek and diverse landscape. Eventually, we will trek in Gokyo lake trail and we will ascend to Mongla Danda at 3900 meters. From Mongla Danda provided mesmerizing views of the region. The views from this Danda will take all your tiredness away and make you feel refreshed. After enjoying some time, we will trek to Phortse Thenga ravine valley. The lodges or guest houses offer serene views of mountains and hills. Overnight stay.

Trekking duration: 4 hours, ascent 530m, descent 290m.

Accommodation: Lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner with hot drinks.

Day 06: Trek to Machhermo 4,470m (14,665 ft), 7 hrs.

As we set towards Machhermo, firstly we will Dole village by climbing a steep hill alongside rhododendron, birch and blue pine mixed forest. We will take a short break in Machhermo, we will continue trekking through the barren hillside, tundra and dotted scrub junipers. The trekking trail is difficult for some initial hours and then it gets easier with the day. The trekking today is quite tougher than the previous few days but the experience and the views are completely worth it.

Day 07: Trek to Gokyo Lake 4,790m (15,715 ft), 4hrs.

Today after a week of serene alpine hill trek, we will reach the Gokyo glacier Lake located at 4,790 meters (15,715 ft). Gokyo lake is vividly beautiful with it's a turquoise colour and calmness. Besides this, you can also see the spectacular mountain's reflection on the Lakes. There are several lodges lined up in the bank of the third Lake.

Gokyo lake is situated on the moraine and the trail is indicated by rock cairns. Our trekking route begins with the steep hill for a while, then the trail runs to the edge of Dudh Khola. While we are walking along the ridge of Dudh Khola, we can see some astounding views of Cholatse (6,335 m) and north Cho Oyu (8,201 m) the sixth -highest mountain in the world.  The views of Nala village, Ngozumpa glacier and Kangtega (6,685 m) also awaits us.

Finally, the track passes below the colossal hill Chadoten (5,360 meters) and through the Ngozumpa moraine to reach beautiful lakes. The ultimate views of the lakes mingled with the mountains can make the trekkers forget their whole fatigue.

Day 08: Hike to Gokyo Ri 5,380m (17,650 ft), for the bird’s eye view.

Positioned at 5380 meters, Gokyo Ri is popular for offering the best views of the region. Both sunrise and sunset views from Gokyo Ri are quite acknowledged. We will hike to Gokyo Ri and witness the mountains get more visible with every step. With Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201 meters), Mt. Everest (8,848 meters), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 meters) and Mt. Makalu (8,463 meters), you will see 4 highest mountains in the world above 8000 meters.  In addition to these many other adjoining mountains, Gokyo Ri is the best viewpoint for beautiful Gokyo Lakes (Dudh Pokhari), and Ngozumpa glacier as well.

Trekking hours: 3 hours, 570m ascent, 570 descent.

Day 09: Trek to Thangnag 4,700m (15,419 ft), 2hrs.

The ninth day of the tour we will explore the magnetic Ngozumpa glacier. As a part of exploration, we will follow the edge of Ngozumpa glacier which will eventually lead us to the exotic Gokyo fifth lake. The landscape of this lake with the reflections of the mountains finally, we trek back to Thaknag which is a stunning mountainous village snuggled amidst the Himalayas.

Trekking duration: 2 hours, 120m ascent, 100m descent.

Day 10:  Cho La pass 5,375m (17,634 ft), Dzongla 4,830m (15,846 ft), 7hrs.

As we set towards Cho La Pass situated at 5375 meters, the trail will gradually ascend and lead us to the summer Yaks grazing lands. Eventually, we will also have to climb on the slab rocks to arrive at Chola Pass. Even if the trekking today is quite tough, the journey today is rich with great background views and astounding experience. We will also carry the needed lunch, snacks and water since we will not find lodges or guesthouses on the trekking route today until we arrive at Zonglha.

Chola Pass at 5375 meters provides mesmerizing views of mountains, alpine valleys and vegetations, glaciers and so much more.

Trekking duration: 7 hours, ascent 590m, descent 540m.

Day 11: Trek to Gorapse 5,171m (16,965 ft), Kalopathar 5,550 (18,208 ft), 6hrs.

Gorapse is a beautiful town and also the last permanently inhabited settlement at the Everest Base Camp trekking trail. The trekking route changes from stones to gravels to moraines following the edge of Khumbu glacier. The 360-degree view of mountains and glacier from the trail and Kalapatthar completely makes up for the challenges faced due to glacial moraine trail, steep trails and high altitude. The sunset view from Kalapatthar marks an extraordinary view of Mount Everest as it is bestowed upon by the setting sun. After enjoying the view, taking some pictures in the camera and savouring the moments, we will return back to the Gorapse lodge for staying overnight.

Day 12: Trek to Everest base camp 5,364m (17,598 ft), Pheriche 8hrs.

Today is the day to conquer the dream of many adventurers all over the world. We will trek to the base of the top of the world- Mount Everest and enjoy the royalty of Mount Everest from up close. About 2 hours of trekking on a glacial moraine will bring you to the serene and yet popular Everest Base Camp. EBC is a suitable point to enjoy the views of Mount Everest and other mountains in the Everest region. Upon making the most of the few moments we have in EBC, we will trek back to Everest Pheriche for the overnight stay. Along the ride, we will stop in Gorapse for lunch.

Maximum Elevation: 5,364 meters (17,598 ft).

Trekking hours: 5 hours, 200m ascent, 200 descent for EBC.

Back trek: to Pheriche 4 hours, 750m descent,70m ascent.

Day 13: Trek to Namche bazaar 3,440 meters (11,286 ft), 5hrs.

We will just retrace our steps and trek back to Namche Bazar. We will be descending for the most part of the day with occasional ascending. As we trek back, the lush rhododendron forest will start to reappear. We will cross Pangboche, Tengboche monastery and Pungi Thanga by looking at the diverse landscape of forests, mountains, hills and pastures. We will hike down via Khumbu highway and finally arrive at Namche where you can rest or maybe buy some souvenirs for your loved ones.

Trekking hours: 9 hours, 420m ascent, 1300m descent.

Accommodation: Lodge with a well-attached bathroom.

Meals: Breakfast/ Lunch/Dinner with hot drinks.

Day 14: Trek Lukla 2,860 meters (9,383 ft), 8 hours.

We will trek downhill from the confluence of Dudh Koshi River and Bhote Koshi river. We will trek towards Lukla as the mountain views behind us will start to disappear as we move farther. We will stay in Lukla Overnight.

Elevation: 2,860 meters (9,383 ft).

Trekking hours: 8 hours, 960m descent, 250m ascent.

Accommodation: Lodge.

Meals: Breakfast/ Lunch/ Dinner with hot drinks.

Day 15: Fly to Kathmandu 1,350 meters (4,429 ft), transfer to the hotel.

After breakfast in the hotel, you will switch to the Lukla airport and fly to Kathmandu. You will then drive to the hotel room where you can take a refreshment break, take rest or roam in the vivacious streets of Thamel. In the evening we will organize a farewell dinner for all our guests.

Day 16: Kathmandu Valley sightseeing 1,350 meters (4,429 ft).

After exploring the Himalayas and exotic lakes of Nepal in Everest region, we will take a day off and enjoy around some revered sites of Kathmandu valley. These revered sites are among the UNESCO world heritage. One doesn’t need to travel to far-flung places to witness the cultural and religious heritages of Nepal. Kathmandu valley is made popular by the presence of Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swanbhunath, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square and many other such precious landmarks. We will explore these UNESCO world heritage sites which are very popular and venerated by the locals as well as international visitors.

Pashupatinath temple is a Hindu pagoda style temple which you will visit today among several others.  This temple stands out not just in Nepal but in the entire Hindu world. Boudhanath is the largest Buddhist shrine of South Asia and is visited by Hindu as well as Buddhist followers. Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square have enchanting architecture, picture gallery, a museum in their premises. Swambhunath of Kathmandu is believed to be more than 2500 years old. This ancient masterpiece represents the rich architecture of medieval Nepal.
