Island Peak is one of the most popular trekking Peak climbing in Nepal. It is situated in Mahalangur Himalaya range of the Everest region. This expedition can be combined with Everest Base Camp trek and as exciting and adventurous as Renjo La pass, 5,360 meters (17,585ft), Gokyo fifth lake, Chola pass 5,365 meters (17,601ft), and Khongma La pass 5,535 meters (18,159ft). From Dingboche the mountain is seen as an island in a sea of ice. The summit is interesting and attractive with a highly glaciated west face rising from the Lhotse Glacier. The mountain itself is the extension of the South Ridge of Lhotse Shar 8,383 meters (27,503ft), separated by a small col. The ridge rising to the south from this point leads to the summit of Island Peak. The extension of this ridge descending south-west is the part of the normal route of ascent and leads to the South Summit. Island peak not only provides an enjoyable climb but also provides some of the most stunning circular view of Himalayas in the Mahalangur Himalaya region. We can see the giant mountains; Nuptse 7,879 meters (25,849ft), Lhotse 8,516 meters (27,936ft), and Lhotse Shar 8,383 meters (27,503ft), from the summit of Peak and make a semi circle in the north. The incomparable fascinating view of Makalu 8,463 meters (27,765ft) and Amadablam 6,812 meters (22,349ft), in the south add more charm for climbing Island Peak.
Imja Tse peak, at the height of 6,189 meters (20,305ft), is more popularly named as Island Peak. The peak was named Island peak by Eric Shiptons, Party in 1953, as the peak resembles an island in a sea of ice when viewed form Dingboche. Later in 1983, the peak was renamed as Imja Tse.
The peak was first ascended in 1953 by a British team (including Hillary) as preparation for climbing Everest. Tenzing Norgay was one of the members who successfully ascended. The peak is to be the part of the south ridge of Lhotse Shar and the main land forms a semi circle of cliffs that rise to the north of the summits of Nuptse, Lhotse, Middle Peak and Lhotse Shar. Cho Polu and Makalu lie to the east of the Island Peak. Baruntse, Amphu and Ama dablam lie to the south.
Introduction of the trail:
A spellbinding viewing three col pass trek and Island trekking peak lies in Mahalangur Himalaya rage of the Everest region. There are many options to reach the base camp of peak. The normal routes go as follow;
Firstly, we take 35 minutes of scenic flight; Kathmandu to Lukla, 2,860 meters (9,383ft), the most famous Hillay airstrip in the world and starts fascinating journey through the famous mountaineer Sherpa’s villages. The trail passes most of the times with stunning mountains views, highly fascinating Sherpa cultured lands and rich of flora and fauna. Phakding and Jorsalle are the main entrance of Sagarmatha National Park, where trekkers have to entry permits before entering into the National park. World-wide popular place, Namche is the main gate-way to Everest region trek. Today our route separates from Namche bazaar, we take opposite route of Everest base camp usual/direct trail. Our trail moves towards Thame, Tenzing Norgye’s birth place, cross Renjo La pass 5,360 meters (17,585ft), having captured panoramic views including 4 over 8,000 meters (26,246ft), Mountains. Cho yo 8,201 meters (26,906ft), Everest 8,848 meters (29,029ft), Lotse 8,516 meters (27,939ft), Makalu 8,463 meters (27,765ft), and many others. We head down trail to visit awesome Gokyo fifth Lake. We again climb up crossing Cho La-pass, finally we reach at Everest base camp 5,364 meters (17,598ft), unlimited trekker and adventure’s main destination. After hiking to Kalopather hill 5,550 meters (18,208ft), for Mount Everest view and proper acclimatization. We trek to Island peak base camp through Khongma La, Chhukung. After climbing Island peak successfully, we trek back to Lukla via Tengbuche and Namche.
Well, the base-camp before summit meeting the peak, is set at Moraine by the shore of Imja Tse lake/Glacier 4,970 meters (16,305ft). We should keep in mind that the place is more likely for avalanche in the event of heavy snow fall. From the base-camp, a well acclimatized party in good weather can make the summit and return to the base camp the same day. However, most of the climbers prefer to set high camp at 5,400 meters (17,716ft), which helps a safe ascent. From the base camp, the route towards south east and foot of Island Peak through steep grassless slopes with numerous rocky steps. We move ahead through the raw trail having the captivating backwards views. The route begins more difficult due the high altitude and technical climbing. After crossing the tearing snowbound with the support of ladder, it leads to the main slope ridge of island peak 6,189 meters (20,305ft). Afterwards, having climbed of 300 meters’ fixed rope, the climbers reach the top. While climbing, the stunning views of Imja Tse Lake, Ama dablam, Makalu and many other peaks follow your eyes.

While flying to Kathmandu along the northern border of Nepal on a clear day is in itself an exciting and memorable experience as exotic panoramic view of snow-capped Langtang, Ganesh Himalaya ranges peaks before your landing In Kathmandu Tribhuvan International airport. Day 02: Special climbing preparation day, permits, gears and equipments. Overnight in Hotel:
Our climbing guide will come in your hotel to check your necessary climbing gears and equipments for trekking and peak climbing. If you don’t have proper equipments and gears, he can advise you to buy or hire in the trekking shops of Thamel. And before his leave with you, the guide will brief you the day program of tomorrow.
Day 03: Scenic flight; early in the morning (Kathmandu to Lukla) & trek to Phakding village 2,610m (8,563ft); 2.5 hrs. Overnight in lodge:
We will have 35 minutes of scenic flight in the morning from Kathmandu to Lukla Hillary airport, the most famous airport in the world. If the weather is favorable, during the flight, we will be sightseeing the most magnificent and sensational view of northern and eastern Himalaya vistas before our landing in Lukla airstrip 2,860 meters (9,383ft). After a few minutes’ break in Lukla bazzar, we set out to scenic journey to Phakding village. It’s way of 2 hrs and 30 minutes for normal trekker. The entire track crosses through famous mountaineering Sherpa villages, lodges, shops, gompas (monasteries), mani walls, prayer stones, fluttering payer flags and more than two well made suspension bridges with fascinating landscape on the way to Phakding. The trail moves ahead weaving lots of up and down to reach to Phakding village 2,610 meters (8,563ft), where we find clean and comfortable lodges with a little shopping and internet service. Today, we spend overnight at Phakding in lodge.
Day 04: Head over Namche bazzar, the capital of Sherpa people 3,440 meters (11,286ft), walk 5 hours uphill. Overnight in lodge:
Today we journey to Namche bazzar 3,440 meters (11,286ft), the main entry gate way of Khumbu valley, the capital of Sherpa people where is the available of luxurious Hotels, banks, shops, trekking equipments and climbing gears, bakery and café and governmental administrative offices for Sagarmatha National Park with Internet services. Today, we walk about 5 to 6 hours to reach Namche bazaar from the Phakding village. The trail more slightly ascends up following Duddha Koshi River to confluence (Dovan) of Duddha koshi and Bhote Koshi River. Finally, we push up strenuous uphill via weaving trail to Namche bazzar. Today we cross 05 well made suspension bridges including Hillary Bridge and few small wooden bridges, Sherpa settlements, Mani walls, prayer stones, waterfalls, rhododendron and blue pine’s forests. While walking on the way, probably the wild animals and birds can be appeared such as Himalayan goat (Thar), Jharals, musk deer and Himalayan pheasant Laphoforous (Danphe) a colorful bird. After walking off 2 to 3 hours we reach Sagarmatha National Park at Jorsalle. Where is required our permits. We make short break to register the permit and then head out to lunch place around Jorsalle. Everyone has dreams to see Mt. Everest in the life, its possible today on a clear day. The Mount Everest appears in front of us after a short walk uphill from the Hillary Bridge. We spend overnight in lodge in Namche.
Day 05: Hike over Everest view Hotel the tree line 3,870m (12,697ft), for panorama of Himalaya including Mount Everest. Sightseeing of Khumjung village, overnight in lodge:
After breakfast, we go on a hike to the Everest view Hotel, established at the highest elevation in the world, 3,870 meters (12,697ft), for stunning Mountain panorama of Amadablam, Thamserku, , Lotse, the Everest and Tauche and many more others Mountains. Then our trip continues for the worth sightseeing of Khumjung valley. After wonderful side trip, we head back to Namche bazaar. Finally we visit mountain museum in Namche. We stay in lodge including breakfast, lunch and dinner with tea or coffee service.
Day 06: A pleasant journey to Thame village 3,820 meters (12,533ft), 4 hours of walk along the old Tibet and Nepal trading trail Nangpala pass. Overnight in lodge:
After breakfast we head out our journey to Thame 3,820 meters (12,533ft), through country sides, opposite direction of Everest base camp trek. Leaving the Sherpa capital (Namche bazaar) our route rises up more gently passing the rhododendron and blue pine forest, few remote Sherpa hamlets and Gompa on the way to Thame with unmatchable landscape. Today we stay in lodge included dinner and breakfast with tea coffee service.
Day 07: Trek to Lungden 4,420 meters (14,501ft), following up Bhote koshi, 9 hours of walk. Overnight at lodge:
Today we trek to Lungden, the snowline passing tranquil amphitheater valley. After walking off 8 to 9 hours continue uphill trail along the ancient trade way of Nepal and Tibet reach Lungde Sherpa village. This route is very famous with NangpaLa pass old trade way and the famous mountaineering, Tenzing Norgye Sherpa village. Leaving from Thame village the trail passes many Sherpa lands including Tenjing Norgye birth land and Yak grazing lands with unusual landscape and Mountain View. We stay at lodge including dinner and breakfast with hot drinks.
Day 08: Push to Renjo La pass 5,360 meters (17,585ft), the stunning panoramic view and descend Gokyo Lake [4,790 meters/15,715ft], 8 hours of walk. Overnight at lodge:
This morning very early we start walking to south slope of Rengo La pass 5,360 meters (17,585ft). The top offers thrilling panoramic views, including 4 over 8,000 meters (26,246ft), Mountains. Cho yo 8,201 meters (26,906ft), Everest 8,848 meters (29,029ft), Lotse 8,516 meters (27,939ft) and Makalu 8,463 meters (27,765ft) and many others below 8,000 meters (26,246ft), mountains are today’s attraction. Today, we walk about 7 to 8 hours to reach Gokyo Lake. The track will pass thoroughly grassless land, snow-filled hill, moraines and glaciers. The Gokyo Lake is the phenomenal. In overall, the trip becomes fabulous with mind blowing views. We stay in lodge included dinner and breakfast service with hot drink like a tea and coffee.
Day 09: Hike to Gokyo Ri 5,357 meters (17,575ft), for the bird’s eye view. Stay at Gokyo fifth Lake:
Today we will climb to Gokyo Ri early in the morning for fascinating views, The trail steeply ascents up to Gokyo Ri 5,357 meters (17,575ft), from the Lake. Absolutely up trail is not easy for all hikers but from the top, there are mind blowing views. It can be sighted views of 4 over 8,000 meters (26,246ft), Mountains, like Mt. Choyu, 8,201 meters (26,906ft), Mt Everest 8,848 meters (29,029ft), Mt Lotse 8,516 meters (27,939ft), Mt Makalu 8,463 meters (27,765ft) and below 8,000 meters (26,246ft), numerous others mountains, noticeable landscape which lies down Ngozumba glacier with beautiful Lakes. We stay in Gokyo lodge for second night.
Day 10: Exploration of Ngozumba glacier and trek to Thagnag 4,700 meters (15,419ft), and walk through glacier, 2 hours. Stay at lodge:
After breakfast, we hike to Fifth Lake following up edge of the Ngozumba glacier in the morning and after hot lunch; we leave to Thagnag 4,700 meters (15,420ft), the last settlement before Cho La pass. We traverse onto the Ngozumba glacier and moraine making short walk about two hours from Gokyo Lake. The trail then straightly moves to Thagnag. We stay at lodge included dinner and breakfast service with hot drink like a tea and coffee.
Day 11: Trek rises up to Cho La pass 5,375 meters (17,634ft), and descend to Dzonghla 4,830 meters (15,846ft), 7 hours of walk. Overnight at lodge:
Leaving from Thagnag the trail gently ascends to Cho La pass 5,375 meters (17,634ft) and then trail descends to Dzunghla valley. It takes 7 hours to reach Dzunghla Lodge from Thagnag lodge. The pass is considerable with crevasses, rock and snow falls, so we have to pass it before 10 A.M. We have to walk beneath the Cho La hill before and after passing it. That’s the reason we wake up at 4 A.M early in the morning to have some cup of tea with light breakfast. After some cups tea with light breakfast, we start to ascend up-hill trail to Cho La col with head lamp at dawn. The track passes wilderness Yak pasturelands, moraine, and snow land, glacier and rock slab before we reach Dzonghla valley. We stay in lodge included dinner and breakfast service with hot drink.
Day 12: Trek to Gorapse 5,171 meters (16,965ft), 5 hours of walk to the famous Everest base camp trail. Stay in lodge:
As usual, we set for breakfast at 7 A.M. Afterwards; we proceed our trek following the famous Everest base camp trekking route. Leaving Dzungla, the route straightly moves towards Labuche and then ascending uphill following the edge of Khumbu glacier. Today, our route passes through grassless lands, moraines, lots stone gravels, with magnificent towering peak’s view. We reach Gorapse, the last permanent settlement Sherpa tribe of Everest region. Overnight at lodge included dinner and breakfast service with hot drinks.
Day 13: After the most popular Everest base camp trekking and hiking of Kalopathar 5,550m (18,208ft), hill, we trek back to Labuche Lodge:
Today, we climb up to Kalapathar 5,550 meters (18,208ft), early in the morning for superb Everest Mountain view. It will be lifetime experience to be at elevation of 5,550 meters (18,208ft), and in front of the world’s highest peak. After breathtaking view of mount Everest, we descend Gorapse for breakfast. Our breakfast energize us to hike to Mt. Everest base camp 5,364 meters (17,598ft). The track crosses moraines, rock fall zones and after scrambling onto the moraine reach Everest base camp. After captivating landscape, we back to Labuce Lodge. We spend overnight at lodge included dinner and breakfast with cup of tea or coffee.
Day 14: Trek to Khongma La 5,535 meters (18,159ft), breath-taking view, trek to Chhukung Lodge 4,730 meters (15,518ft), 8 hours. Overnight at lodge:
Khongma La is the next very wonderful pass in this adventure trip, we traverse Khumbu glacier, climb steep slopes up again and again to reach on Khongma La pass. Unquestionably the trail is very strenuous but the pass is unbelievable for astonishing panoramic backwards views, Such as Labuche peaks, Cholatse peak, Pumari and many more others magnificent Mountains view. After savoring captivating Himalayan view, we descend to Chhukung through shaded ravine. Overnight in lodge included dinner and breakfast service with hot drinks.
Day 15: We trek to Imja-Tse base camp 4,970 meters (16,305ft), 3 hours of more gentle up way. Stay at tented camp:
Climbing practice and good enough acclimatization in Chhukung, today we move towards Island peak base camp 4,970 meters (16,305ft), following raw rugged trail to Base camp. After walking off 3 hours continue more gradually up trail with unmatchable landscape, we catch Island peak base camp, where today’s trip ends. We stay at tented camp with full camping service.
Day 16: Summit of Island peak 6,189 meters (20,305ft), 12 hours of walk top and back to Chhukung lodge:
Today, we are really exciting to take wonderful an experience on top. We wake up at 00: 00 mid night for breakfast and climbing preparation. We leave from base camp at 01 AM for summit. After short walk from base camp, the route is fully gravel, rugged and moraine before you reach crampon point, then track moves to huge challenging crevasses before to reach slope of peak. Finally we climb 80/85 deg’s slope and some sharp ridge with support of fixed line rope to attempt main summit. On top of peak is unquestionably amazing for view. From an altitude of 6,189 meters (20305ft), we savor mesmerizing views of Amadablam, Barunje, Chhopla, Amphu peak, Lotse shar, Lotse down deeper enchanting valley, descend to Chhukung. Overnight in lodge included dinner and breakfast service with hot drink tea and coffee.
Day 17: Contingency day, there is no guarantee that we will have favorable weather on our planed day 16 to have summit so need some spare days for next try:

Day 18: Trek to Tengbuche A historical the famous monastery 3,860 meters (12,664ft), walk 7 hours, down. Stay at lodge:
Today we trek back to Tengbuche monastery throughout the famous mountaineering Sherpa’s villages, some cultivated lands, lodges, mani walls, stupas, gompas, bridges and blooming rhododendron and pine forest especially in April and May, with magnificent Mountain Amadablam view and many more others mountains. We stay in lodge included dinner and breakfast service at Tengbuche.
Day 19: Trek back to Manju 2,835 meters (9,301ft), walk 7 hours, downhill. Overnight at lodge:
Today we trek back to Jorsalle - Manju via the famous Sherpa town Namche bazzar, the capital of Sherpa people. Leaving from Tengbuche the trail steeply drops to Phungathanga, a Sherpa hamlet, where we cross well made suspension bridge over Dudha koshi River then the trail moves towards Namche bazaar rising up. We break in Namche for lunch then trek to downhill meeting point of two Rivers Bhote koshi River and Dudh koshi River. We cross the Hillary bridge again over the Dudha koshi River and walk continue following down River, crossing well made suspension bridges and passing Sherpa lodges and villages to reach Manju. Overnight in lodge included dinner and breakfast service.
Day 20: Final trekking day we trek back to Lukla 2,860 meters (9,383ft), 5 hours of walk. By via our previous way. Overnight at Lodge:
After fabulous trekking and peak climbing for your lifetime experience, we come back to Lukla, where our trek started. Today we are very happy with our successful and wonderful trip; we are very hurried to reach Lukla after long trip to celebrate happiness with singing song and dancing or by visiting some pubs in this evening. We stay in lodge included dinner and breakfast with hot drink service.
Day 21: A 35 minutes of scenic flight Lukla to Kathmandu 1,350 meters (4,429ft), transfer to hotel included breakfast service, by tourist bus or in car:
Today, we have a scenic flight Lukla to Kathmandu Tribhuwan international airport and transfer to Hotel included breakfast service by tourist bus or in car. The company manages for evening farewell dinner with you people in standard restaurant.
Day 22 – 23: Contingency day, there is no guarantee that we will have favorable weather on our tentative day 21 to have flight, so need some spare days to cover our program:
If we get flight cancelled due to the bad weather or any technical problem we need some spare days for covering our program. After missing flight schedule time in Himalaya region, there is a very less chance to get flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, so we have got another alternative way is to take a helicopter or trek to down Phapluk – Salleri for two days fantastic trek and Jeep drive followed by bus ride, back to Kathmandu Hotel.
Day 24: Departure for home, finally we drop you in international airport in your departure time and say good bye:

We set up a permanent base camp for as long as the expedition continues. Each of the members has a personal North- face VE 24 dome tent with waterproof compact mat. We provide chairs and clean fascinating table with solar electricity light make your stay at base camp as luxurious. We have a toilet tent; all is in perfectly hygienic condition and order.
We provide sufficient and tasty hygienically prepared food at both Camps, Base Camp and High Camp during your peak climbing. Plenty of high altitude food is provided at higher camps.
Climbing Training/ Rental Gears:
The guide instructs you lot in the Island (Imja-Tse) peak base camp time, before head higher Camps. The guide tips you very important climbing techniques, like climb on slab rocks and on blue ice, Active rappelling (Up sailing), and Safety placement, proper arrange of gears and equipments while climbing and use of proper climbing gears.
The climbing gears are super expensive, so why you spend lots money for once time use? You can have climbing gears on hire from us with reasonable price. The rental gears are branded of Black Diamond, La Sportiva, Grivel, and Petzl. We Himalayan Diamond Adventure highly recommend you the Union of International Alpinist Association (UIAA) tested gears one for safe and comfortable climbing.
Safety Measurement, Weather Forecast and Communication System:
After proper acclimatization and well prepared to push summit, we will ensure favorable weather forecast. We always stand on our quality of weather forecast service. Its affiliated with government of Nepal (Meteorological Division) Mountaineering is itself dangerous cause of high altitude, frostbite, hypothermia, blindness, snowfall, rock fall, avalanches, crevasses and white out.
However, if we are well equipped, we can avoid the high risk. We are very aware of a possible happening accident in the mountain, so we always ensure our safety first and then we go to the summit. In case, climber face any unpleasant incident, we have a facility of 4 liters Russian Oxygen cylinder with summit mask regulator for emergency cause and all required treatment aids with the guide. That means we are stand-by against any danger in the mountain.
Besides these, the guide, as well as the climbers, would be carrying the Satellite phones or Radio sets to approach communication service. Otherwise, focusing the major subject safely, we will arrange all in time even call the Rescue Team or Helicopter and take you down to the low elevation.
